Can you use this to monitor general audio throughout the app? Similar to the cameras but without video?

It is set to listen to the sound a smoke detector makes. It even states that the detector has to be recent or it doesn't work. So no, it can not be used for general audio!

I have the ring alarm system. why can’t this device be used on smoke detectors that are older than 10 years old? mine are 14 years old

1st off you definitely need to replace any smoke detector that is 10 years old or older, they do have dates on them. 2nd it states that it CAN be used with older detectors. This is Rings answer to older detectors that don't connect to the Ring alarm.

Can I bypass this when my system is disarmed? The alarm near our kitchen goes off frequently and I don’t want it to call when at home during the day.

There is a 15 minute bypass for testing purposes (by pushing a button on the listener), and you can change your reporting status to "Self" (versus "monitored") in anticipation of benign smoke, and finally a longer push of the button on the listener may also create a prolonged disabling (this is not documented but in doing a setup I accidentally stumbled on this I believe). But, NO, you can not click a radio button on the app to take the listener offline in any mode. Finally, if your kitchen smoke detector is going off frequently, you might consider if you are using the right detector (photoelectric vs ionization) and location in the kitchen.

Will it work with alarms that speak the problem (smoke/CO2) and location with a human voice (or only those that emit a siren noise)?

The Ring listener is listening for T3 (smoke) and T4 (carbon monoxide/CO) audio signals from the smoke/CO sensor. These are also known as 'Temporal 3' and 'Temporal 4' signals. Essentially the T3 (smoke) audio output is three on/off pulses of an audio tone, with a frequency of approximately 500 Hz. The T4 (CO) audio output is four of these on/on audio pulses. Like the original poster, I own several Kidde i12010SCO smoke/CO detectors and have not been able to get the Ring listener to respond to smoke/CO alarm testing events. I have confirmed with Kidde and with my ears that the Kidde i12010SCO audio output does have the T3 and T4 outputs. Still working to determine why the Ring listener doesn't respond to the audio outputs from my Kidde detector.
