what kind of finish is on the wood?

Not sure. But it looked natural, blond wood. Also, smaller than expected, but sounds nice. Good for a child musician.

Looking for an instrument that will making a sound of a donkey clomping for Palm Sunday. Will this make that sound?

Perhaps, but you might need an additional mallet. Because the cavities in the woodblock only go halfway back, you can get more than one sound. I was not really able to make the donkey sound on my own, though. Hope this helps.
