A lot of packaging for some stuff that may or may not be what you want
I've always wanted to try Mini Brands but resisted because of the excessive packaging and the random element. Unfortunately, my first experience has confirmed my expectations.I got a two-pack. The two surprise balls come inside a plastic cylinder. Each ball has two plastic covers, one with the brand name and another (blank) layer under that. The hard plastic ball has two halves which pop apart when the plastic layers are removed and you slightly squeeze the ball. Inside is a collectors' guide (paper) and the 5 items, each separated bagged in plastic-coated paper. I don't understand why it can't just be normal paper, since the plastic-coated paper isn't recyclable. Some surprise brands will find clever ways to make the ball reusable, but these, and the containing cylinder, are basically just more garbage. There's no way around it, the packaging is excessive.I got ten items across two balls/one cylinder. I got one repeat - which is "ultra rare" according to the collectors' guide, making the repeat even more annoying since supposedly a repeat of this particular item was "ultra" rare. To add insult to injury, it's the only "ultra rare" that I DIDN'T want, the Squid Game piggybank. I've never seen Squid Game and couldn't even tell what this was supposed to be at first. It's two clear plastic halves that form the bank, with a molded plastic money pile inside with very grainy printing on it of a person. I suppose I appreciate the detail but that's the thing with these surprise toys, you run the risk of getting stuck with things you don't care for, and also duplicates, and unfortunately I got both at once.Of my eight other items, the first ball had one "rare" (a Witcher monster thing) and three "common" items: Dustin's (plastic) ball cap from Stranger Things, a sword from Witcher, and the dog from Bridgerton. I wanted the dog; it's well-painted and cute, like the animal figurines you can get from companies that specialize in such. The monster and the sword both came in their own plastic bubbles which is annoying. The monster is detailed and stands on its own, even though it's all one paint color. The sword is well-painted but super tiny and insubstantial. I assume it was in its own plastic shell because it's very bendy. The ball cap is mostly well-molded and painted (there's one small smudge and one small molding error but that's not a big deal). It is printed with "Thinking Cap" on the front; the printing is slightly grainy but legible. The second ball had one "common" (a Cobra Kai Johnny Lawrence figurine); one "iconic" (a golden mask from Squid Game"); and two "rare" items, a demigorgon figure and a Rebel Moon robot. The mask comes with a badly warped black stand. The robot and demigorgon both have clear plastic pieces (VERY easy to lose) which attach to their feet so they can stand upright. The robot looks nice; it's all one color but does stand well with its stand attached. The demigorgon only stands if I attach the stand to the wrong foot, and even then it will fall over easily. The paint job is nice and it's a pretty detailed mold. The Cobra Kai figure is great; it comes inside its own tiny (legibly-printed) box which can be opened. He is inside a plastic shell, with a clear plastic cover to simulate the window on the box. You can take him out of both and easily put him back inside and in the box. He is only an inch tall so the painting is extra impressive.Of the things I got I'm kinda bummed; I didn't get any of the ones I really wanted except the dog and the demigorgon. Of the ones I did get the Cobra Kai figurine (who is a "common"!) is the most impressive. The pieces are all well-made, but getting a repeat with only two balls is such a bummer. What I got also doesn't seem to reflect the rarities given on the collectors' guide. I thought I had a good chance of getting the Eddie figurine (the thing I wanted most) because it was "common", supposedly, buuuuuuuut I guess not. And if I want to get it specifically I'd have to pay some reseller more than I'd pay for an entire extra ball. But an extra ball runs the risk of just being more stuff I don't want. It's insidious. So I guess the TL;DR of all this is: it's basically just gambling. You might get lucky or you might, like me, get decidedly UNlucky. If you like most of the 31 possible items, then go for it. But if your heart is set on a particular item, or couple of items, or even half of the items as in my case, then prepare for disappointment.Ah well. At least it's all well-made.
