Product Description DVD Special Features:Language: English, Dolby Digital Subtitles: English Widescreen 1.85:1 .co.uk Review Released in 1995, Mighty Aphrodite was arguably Woody Allen's most successful film since Hannah and Her Sisters almost a decade earlier. The story follows Allen's neurotic New York sports writer Lenny, who becomes obsessed with tracking down his adopted son's birth mother, Linda. His odyssey is narrated and commented upon with coruscating wit by a Greek chorus led by F Murray Abraham. Despite their dire warnings at his rather ham-fisted attempts at hubris, there is nothing tragic in the ultimately uplifting tale. Lenny eventually locates Linda (an Oscar-winning performance from the enchanting Mira Sorvino) and discovers that she's caught up in just about every aspect of the sex trade. Without revealing his reasons, he sets about improving her life with hilarious results. Sorvino is a wonder as the tall, alluring and vulnerable Linda, who talks with candid innocence of her adventures in vice (she offers a blow job as if it was a pound of apples) and clearly deserves a better hand than she has been dealt. Helena Bonham Carter, not entirely convincing as a driven Manahattanite, plays Allen's ambitious art dealer wife whom Lenny ultimately realises is the love of his life. And a host of stars including Claire Bloom, Gwenn Verdon and Olympia Dukakis (Jocasta) contribute shining moments to this intelligent and touching comedy. When the chorus bursts into "When You're Smiling" at the end, it's like the sun coming out.On the DVD: The widescreen (1.85:1) presentation gives the location-shot chorus scenes marvellous resonance, although the Dolby Digital mono soundtrack is occasionally rather flat. Both picture and sound quality, however, preserve the intimacy which is the trademark of Allen's finest work. There are no extras beyond a choice of subtitles and the usual scene selection menu.--Piers Ford

Woody Allen's best film
Mighty Aphrodite is the film in which Woody Allen gets the balance right between writing a script that is serious literature and mixing the serious literature with a modern day low-brow bestseller. He uses the idea of the chorus from ancient greek literature as the voice of his conscience and makes a most unlikely series of events seem plausible and highly entertaining, and manages to make something that could have turned out as seeming very sordid, touching and memorable. He was helped in no small part by Mira Sorvino's brilliant (oscar winning) feat of acting in which she played the prostitute Linda as somebody who was like a cartoon character but who was still recognisable as a human being that the viewer would think could exist in real life. There are plenty of subtle and amusing twists and turns in the plot and you come away from this film feeling positive and optimistic about people and life in general. How this wonderful movie managed to inspire Woody Allen to come up with the dreadful film "Deconstructing Harry" a year later is beyond me!

Mighty fine
A really enjoyable comedy from Mr Allen. It is worth seeing the film just for the interaction of Woody Allen and Mira Sorvino - she deservedly won an oscar for this performance. The dialogue is funny and witty. Not so keen on Helena Bonham Carter's character I can't see why she would be with the Woody character in the first place but overall if you want a good laugh this is highly recommended.

I'm a big fan of Woody Allen and especially enjoy his films when he stars in them , there's wonderful interplay here between him and Mira Sorvino . They're ably backed by a great supporting cast and typically Allen quirky scenes. Very funny and entertaining.

One of his very best
This is a very funny film where husband (Allen) and his wife who are unable to have children adopt a baby. However, Allen then is plagued by a desire to find out who the birth mother is. A great story, lots of unexpected happenings along the way, and a wonderful ending.

Watchable
Typical Woody Allen film. It's New York, Allen is kooky and a sports writer, the leading lady (Mira Sorvino, looking magnificent as a tart with a heart) is kooky. Not a lot happens but the human heart is revealed. Helena Bonham Carter is there as the somewhat underwitten stressed wife. A Greek Chorus is sometimes amusing, sometimes not. It only last 1.5 hours so why not watch it?

Enjoyable
Probably not Woody Allen at his best, but still very good fun - I loved the sequences with the Greek chorus; and also the film was very thought provoking. I thought the basic premise of a man wishing to find out more about the parental background of the baby boy he has adopted with his wife, is an excellent premise for a film. But as the Greek chorus comment - is this really a good idea ? The ideas are explored in an entertaining fashion - maybe it is a five star film, I don't know, ... but then I found the story line of the wife-character trying to start up an art gallery a bit less than interesting.

Hey Woodie! Haywood is to New York as Hollywood is to LA
“Daddy, who’s the boss, you or Mommy?”“I’m the boss. She’s the decision maker, but I control the tv remote!”Some Woody Allen movies come across better than others. This one is great. All leave you in a better state of mind after watching than before you started watching. For someone as meek and gentle as Woody was formed in a ‘physical sense’ Woody is one of the strongest people who might have influenced the lives of many human beings. He calls his own shots and compromises little on his artistic insights. He knows casting, psychology, whatever business it takes to make and sell a film, and he is of course a very funny person.

Capolavoro!
Un capolavoro del grande Woody Allen in lingua originale. Comico, profondo, sorridente, amaro, ...
