World War II Abandoned Places

An interesting collection of photos and descriptions of places we should never forget. From abandoned factories where V2 rockets were built to crumbling bunkers and sunken vessels, this book showcases the history of world war 2 through the buildings and wrecks left behind. A reflective and informative read, thank you NetGalley and Amber books Ltd for the opportunity to read and review this interesting book.

This is a lovely and well made book. The photos are fantastic. It’s not a reference or guide but just enjoy the pics if you like this sort of thing. Mainly photos with a few notes on each but you know what you are buying.

Atmospheric photographs of the abandoned structures left behind the chaos of World War Two.From rows of tank traps to still standing flak towers in German cities, a variety of bunkers for Hitler and his cronies, military wrecks of planes and tanks to the concrete pill boxes liberally spread across Europe and the UK.I have a friend who lives in Normandy and we often walk along the D-Day beaches and explore the gun emplacements and other relics of the German defences... part of our recent history, growing up just after the War, and with our parents being intimately involved makes this book even more special.Perhaps not as romantic as its sister publication  Abandoned Castles (Abandoned Places series) , this well produced book with useful captions is intriguing to look through - and somewhat spooky or sinister in places... the old submarine pens with their huge concrete roofs on the coast of France must be scary close up.

Brilliant book if interested in what happened to important areas used during the war in later days.

This was an evocative collection of photographs of World War Two structures and vehicles, mostly now being reclaimed by nature. More of a photo book, there is obviously more to the story of each of these places than the brief blurb accompanying the pictures can properly explain. Having visited Oradour and Tyneham, it unfortunately fell very short of describing the complete horror of the murder of an entire village at Oradour, and the sacrifice of the people who were kicked out of Tyneham with nothing but the value of the food in their vegetable gardens in order for it to be used by the army for training purposes.

This s a spooky book, in part as there are few humans to be seen among these ruins Most of the excellent color photos are of fortifications (mostly in Europe) large and small, many of them not well known here. For example, what appear to be Maginot Line ouvrage are actually contemporary forts built much farther east. The amount of effort that went into these facilities (let alone valuable steel and cement) is mind boggling, especially as few of them really held off an enemy for long. The row of tank traps on the cover photo is one partial exception. The book is we arranged and captioned--and thus hard to put down.
