An excellent history for 10+ kids!
This book covers The Stone Age to The Fall of the Roman Empire and is geared towards students ages 10+. The information is easily read and understood, including showing students WHY history is important and how it affects later generations. There is also an accompanying workbook and journal that can be purchased separately. The chapters could easily be divided into an 8-10 week course, or even further is you choose to do smaller sections per session. There is a warning in the "About This Book" section regarding some artifacts/paintings/drawings being anatomically correct. There are a few of these, but most of the artwork in the book is not. This is not a Bible-based curriculum and doesn't follow a Young Earth timeline, but apart from a few mentions in the first chapter regarding ancient history, this viewpoint throughout the rest of the book shouldn't pose an issue for those looking for a Young Earth timeline. It would make an excellent supplement to any history curriculum.Whether you're looking to supplement your homeschool history, or just a fun educational reading time, this book is an excellent choice!

Perfect!!
My son is homeschooled and he requested for history to learn about ancient civilization. I was searching for a while and found this and decided to order! OMG hands down the best! He loves reading it and following along with the workbook. It has great detail and easy to follow. He really looks forward to his history lesson because of how engaging and interesting this book makes the lessons! I highly recommend! I greatly appreciate this company too because it had a teacher guide and a timeline for the student to follow along. I didn’t see an answer sheet for the timeline and when I reached out to The Insightful Scholar, they answered quickly and within a day sent me the information! They truly care about their product and making sure you have everything you need to make it the best experience for your student/child! I’m so thankful we found them!

Good middle school history curriculum
This book is broken into sections on Sumerians, Babylonians, Egyptian civilizations, other Mediterranean civilizations (Minoans, Myceneans & Phoenicians), the Greeks and the Romans. It doesn't cover the whole ancient world, but it probably goes more in depth on these civilizations than a curriculum that covers the whole world would be able to. It covers topics like the rise & fall of the civilization, inventions and achievements, class structure, everyday life, religion, and art & architecture. In addition, each chapter includes a map, pictures, and historical highlights. There's also an audiobook. It's pretty well written and engaging, and it's suitable for logic stage students (if you're a classical educator). Combined with the workbook it's a full history curriculum. From what I've read so far, it's secular. The Tower of Babel was mentioned from a neutral perspective, it is not creationist, and it marks years with CE/BCE.Overall, I like it and the workbook that goes with it and I'm looking forward to seeing more curriculums from The Insightful Scholar.

An engaging secular account of ancient civilizations without discrediting the Bible.
The text is engaging. Easy for kids (and adults!) to follow, as it reads like a “read-aloud”. I also like the way it presents vocabulary and refers back to ideas previously presented, which definitely helps with retention! Presents information in a sequential way and provides a good review section after every chapter. Focuses on one civilization at a time, so it lacks the “review of history” or “timeline” approach that “The Mystery of History” and “Story of the World” programs provide. I would use this in conjunction with The Mystery of History, volume 1, to fill in the gaps, provide contrast with the Biblical perspective in MOH, and talk about perspective more.

Thorough and easy to read!
Pavi and Piper are the perfect guides to introduce and teach about Ancient Civilizations. To start, my son and I were guided to think about “what” history is and understand that it can be seen differently depending on the perspective. This was the perfect starting off point to seeing what history is and how we are also making history everyday! The visuals and maps were clear and helpful and every chapter was filled with detailed information that was thorough, yet easy to understand. The Historical Highlights at the end of chapters were also a very fun and quick snapshot of the period! I’d recommend this history book to homeschool families looking to learn about Ancient Civilizations of Mesopotamia and the Mediterranean regions!

Comprehensive
I ordered the Kindle version of this book, and it is chalk full of information! It had highlights at the end of each chapter and includes pictures that correspond to the vocabulary terms mentioned. I'd compare this to a thematic unit, where you would also see the elements of other subjects, such as mathematics and language arts, incorporated into it.What I love most about this book is the emphasis on the authors' perspective of the stories found in history. Unfortunately, this is something I actually learned during college instead of in my earlier educational years. So, I appreciate how this book gives the student that critical piece of information regarding history and it's complicated relationship with people and their viewpoints related to their experience of witnessed events. All in all, I think this book is great. I do believe it is wordy for much younger grades, but one can easily adapt and restructure to fit the needs and level of the student.
