Has anyone tried this for the hook on the end of a trailer winch?

Yes, thats a good idea. because you can attach a hook and line to the pad eyelet on the boats bow from directly front on. By using the same wRino method for attaching a hook and line to a dock-ring Please be aware that the width of the nose groove that holds the hook is designed for a particular Buoy Mooring Hook that is 7.43mm or 0.30 inch across its flat section. This hook is available in the USA and UK (Search Buoy Mooring hook). You would have to shackle this hook to your winch line. Please also be aware that the lassoing function is helpful in lassoing objects from the boat, such as a part of the trailer. I have found this very helpful when there is a strong sweep (side) current.

What diameter line works best for this hook?

The best dock-line size is 9/16" (14mm) Suitable line size range is 1/2" to 5/8" (12mm to 16mm) The best type of dock-line is the manufactured pre-spliced type. the type sold on Amazon and most chandlers.. Pre-spliced lines have a tapering splice section which is ideal because you can move the splice forward or back in the splice holding clip, to get the line grip that suits you best. An advantage of using a dock-line when docking, is that the bitter end can be tied off to a cleat on the boat. This is ideal for the popular spring line method of docking.
