No. The record & playback are two separate functions.

Would you need or use a fethead phantom with a sennheiser mkh 50 mic using the tascam x8?

Wow that is it with the Sennheiser mkh 50 mic? So long as the MKH 50 will accept either a 24V or 48V phantom power source, the Tascam X8 will power it. I use a Rode NT1 condenser mic and the X8 has no problem powering it.

Can i use lithium (li-ion) rechargeable batteries such as ebl brand on amazon?

I use PaleBlue rechargeables with no issue. Good luck!

CAN i run both phantom mic and ¼' line-level at same time?

Yes you can. You can plug your mic that requires phantom power into one of the XLR jacks and you can plug your 1/4" line into a different XLR jack. The XLR jacks accept both male XLR and 1/4" inputs. You can also plug in 3.5 mm jacks if needed.
