really well made piece of furniture... fantastic deal
i don't know furniture but to my eyes, this looks amazing. it's solid wood, no evidence of laminates or anything like that and it's HEAVY wood... that box must've been murder to deliver to my doorstep. and it was packed really really well so my personal experience is that it was delivered in flawless condition with no dings or scrapes at all and all corners were reinforced with thick styrofoam blocks.ASSEMBLY:- you just need to attach the four legs with two threaded bolts that you can spin in 90% of the way in with just your fingers. the last bit of tensioning can be done with the included alan wrench.- easily one man/woman job. i'm always wary of furniture assembly because sometimes, it's designed to be put together with help and doing it solo is murder but this is easy. hardest part is taking the box out to the trash actually....- i took about an hour but that's including unpacking everything from it's well taped up protective foam and then ditching the box."BUTTERFLY FOLD OUT":before purchase i really wondered what the hell that was... basically, the middle section that allows you to extend the table to be wider is built into the table and attached by an axle... after you pull the table top apart to reveal the extra space, you grab and unfold it and it smoothly unfolds into the space. then you push the ends which have pegs and fit it all together and lock it with the snap locks underneath and you're done. really love the fact that the center piece is built into the table and not something that i have to remove and store somewhere else.NOTE - if you open the box correctly you will see the bottom of the table with the table top facing the bottom of the box on the floor. you will see this butterfly fold out section in the middle covered with foam and your immediate instinct will be to try to pull it free. you can try to do that for a few minutes but as i mentioned it is securely attached to an axle. this is NOT MADE TO BE REMOVED. so ignore it. ignore the foam covering it. read the instructions and attach the legs. you will be able to remove the foam and fiddle with the butterfly middle section AFTER the table is assembled and upright and the two ends pulled apart to reveal the space.INSTRUCTIONS:in the ikea style that i'm familiar with. mostly diagrams. but it's so simple that it few pages are all you need and just looking over it for a minute will tell you everything you need to know.SIZE:even without the middle extension, it can seat 4 people imo. it won't be spacious and you can't have a lot of dishes in the middle... so not ideal for something like thanksgiving dinner. but for 4 people with a plate and cup, it'll work just fine. but without the extension, it's also really nice for just one or two people too... then it's nice and spacious without taking up too much floor space. these are just a little bit wider and more rectangular than the square tables at my starbucks. for my purposes, it's more than perfect.anyway, really pleased with the table! i feel like a got a great deal and it looks great in the dining area.

incredible table at an amazing price; top damaged in delivery
This table is the furniture bargain of the year. It is as well-made as tables costing 5X the price. Every piece is solid wood. The legs attach with 1/4" bolts going into metal sleeves in the legs as opposed to screws into wood. The finish of the wood is perfect. The butterfly leaf functions perfectly and adds to the table's usefulness. That said, I have two minor pieces of advice and one big complaint.Advice: 1. buy or borrow a small ratchet with an allen head or star fitting to use in attaching the legs. If you can't get a ratchet, go to the hardware store and buy regular bolts and use a box wrench. The table comes with 1/4" allen head bolts and a small allen wrench. The bolts must be screwed in approximately 2". If you use the small wrench that comes with the set, it will take you a very long time to screw in all 8 bolts and your hands will be very sore. More importantly, you will probably never get the bolts properly tightened. A ratchet wrench makes short work of the job. 2. Several of the 8 bolts had damaged or incomplete threads at their tips. This is a manufacturing defect and will prevent them from mating with the threads in the inserts in the legs. It is an easy fix with either a hand file or a grinding wheel. if you don't have these tools, you will have to buy new bolts as you will never be able to screw the damaged bolts into their corresponding threaded inserts in the legs. The big complaint is that the table arrived with one damaged corner on the top. Obviously, it had been dropped on the corner. I suspect this was done by UPS as it is the second table we've had delivered this week and each was damaged. This table, as was the other, weighs 70 lbs, yet UPS has them delivered by only one person. The package is cumbersome and the drivers do not use hand trucks. Each delivery has been when I was not at the house. Thus, I can't accuse the driver; however, I strongly suspect he tried to carry the large box from the truck to our door and let it drop when placing it on the concrete patio. My final advice is to do your best to be present when the delivery is made; to watch the driver as he handles the box; and, to carefully examine the corners of the box before it is opened, taking photos if you have any concern it has been roughly handled during delivery.

Lot of seams for food to get caught
The table looks nice and is sturdy, but I had to cover the top with a piece of clear vinyl. When the table is expanded there are 3 seams where food can collect. Can't use tablecloths that get pulled off when toddlers are here.

Tabletop Marred
I ordered this item in October. It looked perfectly fine when I initially received it. I had read the reviews that the tabletop scratches easily so I placed a heavy towel down until I received my plexiglass tabletop protector. The other day when the sun hit the table I noticed that the top is pitted and scratched something I didn't see under the kitchen light. I am in a single household and was very careful in placing items on it. I am not sure if the wood is degrading or if this item was returned and resold as new. It is a nice table but the quality of the wood is questionable.
