Worth the hassle
I have switched from using a well known triple-bladed shaving system by Gillette with disposable razor heads to this. I wanted to partly because of the cost of the blade cartridges- they worked out well over a pound each. I also did not like throwing the unrecyclable plastic/metal unit away to landfill. What I have learned is:- it is easier to shave with my previous set up than this. This does take some practice. You need to be lighter and use fewer passes or you will get sore. You need to think about the angle of the razor and you need to think about the direction of your hair growth.- it is helpful to use a hot washcloth on your face before shaving- I have found it is better to be more sparing with shaving foam than previously but it is fine - I can’t be dealing with all that shaving soap and badger hair brush weirdness!- it is good to use aftershave balm afterwards. I use a Nivea men one and it is really pleasant, not greasy, and smells good. I was given another which turned out to be nothing like as good.- it is possible to get a very close shave. Shaving below the chin line takes the most practice.Despite the extra issues, I am sticking with this. I first used Gillette razor blades because I knew that name. I later found these Astra platinum blades are much better - some experimentation is probably worth while. Buying in bulk means the blades cost just 9p each and I use them for about 4 shaves. I bought a metal box you can slot used blades into and recycle them all at once, safely, when it is full (which it won’t be for about 3 years!).The unit itself has a good weight to it, is well made, feels good in the hand. To clean it after use I just unscrew the handle a few turns and rinse the head under the tap. I know there are more expensive ones on the market but this is fine for me. I think it is probably an advantage to have a handle with lots of grip, like this, rather than something smooth. If you are buying this as a present for someone what currently uses a disposable razor system it is probably worth checking they are willing to make the switch first. The first couple of shaves were not that great but I persevered and things quickly improved. I look forward to using this now.
