Grand Funk

RED ALBUM was THE GRAND FUNK RAILROAD in all their raw, nasty, sexual, high energy, Live sounding Power Trio madness. This is a Great second Album surpassing there great debut On Time, and helps rank GFR with the Great's of the 70s like Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. This album was recorded live and the only overdubs are putting some rhythm guitar where the leads are (al of GFRs Terry Knight Produced were done the same way, as fast as possible and No Frills). Like On Time its a sledge hammer album, but even heavier with the smash songs that GFR used live such as In Need, Inside Looking Out and Paranoid. Red Album which is what we GFR fanatics call Grand Funk, also has the radio friendly songs Mr. Limousine Driver, Please Don't worry, and High Falottin Women. As well as the Sledge hammer rocker Got This Thing On The Move. This was what GFR was all about, Mel Schacher Playing his BOOMING BASS behind the note. Don Brewer Playing his POUNDING DRUMS ahead of the Note and Mark Farner playing his wild rhythms and screeching leads on GUITAR anywhere; before, after, or in the middle of the note. Or to be more accurate Don playing at the beginning of the note, Mel playing at the end of the note and Mark going wherever he wants with his wild rhythms. This sound made GFR something unique and special and gave them a driven sound that made you feel like your moving. Don and Mark do great Harmonies and both are excellent lead singers as well. Red Album is a special album every hard rock fan should have in there collection. GFRs sound can't be faked or copied, its something natural to the three musicians. This album along with Live, On Time, and Closer To Home, captured millions of fans for GFR who still reminisce about these albums to this day. This edition of RED ALBUM the CD is 24 Bit remastered with New liner Notes, Bonus Tracks, and photos. The Bonus tracks are a demo version of Nothing is the same and an extended version of Mr. Limousine Driver and there very cool. This is the first Time Capitol has released Red Album on CD in the USA and is a must have CD for every GFR fan and Every fan of Hard Rock. Is there someone standing Just out side your door? Having owned all the Grand Funk Railroad albums from "On Time" through "We're An American Band" on every media available (LP,8 track, cassette and CD)and spending a lot of money on Japanese Imports re-issues and the like I have come to the conclusion (after comparison side by side) That the 2002 Remasters are by far the best sounding of the lot (barring a brand new original album). Finally Mel Schacher's bass is out front with the rest of the band instead of muffled in the mix. Yes they are a little hot, but hey we are talking about Grand Funk Railroad it was meant to be hot! I mean after all the original albums said "Too Be Played Loud" So ditch all the other crap and buy the 2002 Remasters on Capitol, you won't regret it !!! Oh and why only "On Time - We're An American Band" the boys (probably under pressure from the record label) started recording junk. Yeah there are some good songs on their later albums, but c'mon "The Locomotion" sucked. "Some Kind Of Wonderful" was a good cover but still the music was suffering.

Mark Farner's voice and the drumming and best bass player ever is enough reason to hurry this purchase. Outside Looking In is the show!

A must have for everyone who loves classic 1970's Rock

This album was certainly a pinnacle of sorts for Grand Funk; it's energetic, raw, &, perhaps, one of their more consistent albums. This power trio never got the respect they were due except for the generation that grew up with them. This was their second studio album & it peaked at #11 on the album charts. The only single from the album to chart was "Mr. Limousine Driver", it barely made the Top 100 peaking at #97. The album opens with on of Grand Funk's best songs, "Got This Thing on the Move", one of their best rockers with a driving bass line, the song fizzles a little toward the end but still great. "Please Don't Worry" is only average. "High Falootin' Woman" is all right, it's typical Funk boogie rock. It;s hard to believe that "Mr. Limousine Driver" was released as a single, it's easily the weakest song on the album. "In Need" is next & completely refocuses the album back to the opening potential of the first song. "In Need" is one of their very best songs & they really stretch it out. It features some more riffs from Schacter who never got the credit he deserved. Farner shines once again on harmonica which most people don't talk about much, it might've been his strongest instrument. "Winter and My Soul" slows it down a little but isn't a bad song. "Paranoid" opens with voices, an air raid siren & a baby crying before getting into the actual song. This was one of their better songs. The original album closed with the incredible "Inside - Lookin' Out", arguably the best song in their repertoire. The Animals were the first to record this song; this is one of those few times that the cover version was an improvement. The album has two bonus tracks: the demo version of "Nothing Is the Same" which would be on their next studio album & an extended version of "Mr. Limousine Driver". These are okay but there's nothing revelatory. For Grand Funk fans this is one of the three albums to get, the other two being E Pluribus Funk & We're an American Band. Grand Funk is so raw & powerful, it's hard to ignore them. But if you listen carefully you can tell that they weren't a tight group but, of course, bands in those days didn't have much time to record. This album, along with just about all their contemporaries, was typically recorded in about a week. So mistakes, many times, were left in the final product. B ut that's okay, too, they represented a lot of the views of young Americans at that time in history. They were a blue collar band & they worked long & hard in order to become successful. I still enjoy their music.

If you love Cream and Jimi Hendrix you would love this one, this album is a hidden gem, highly underrated, Grand Funk was famous for "we are an american band" or even for "locomotion" that is Grand Funk going pop, this Grand Funk is the perfect mixture within blues and rock, The highest peak of Grand Funk, without any doubt "Inside looking out" written by the Animals here performed by Grand Funk is one of the best rock songs ever, is pure energy, I prefer this version over the original, outstanding Mark Farmer vocals, incredible guitar, the harmonica only improve the energy of this song. "In need" is my second favorite song from this album, "Paranoid", "High falootin woman", "Got this thing on the move" this album is incredible, best Grand Funk release, "On time" has a similar mood, but this one is simply outstanding, this version includes "Nothing is the same", fine song.

I was a sophomore in high school when this record came out. I remember I won it at one of the game boothes at the county fair. My friend Bob was into them and I liked them too. We had a three piece band and set about learning a couple of the songs from the "Red Album." "Limosine Driver" comes to mind. The albums that came out after this just didn't turn me on and I actually came to look at GFRR as sort of a joke. Recently I bought this cd from Amazon and it blew my mind all over again. It's hard rock, but primal. The guitar solos sometimes verge on psychedelic and it reminds me a lot of Jefferson Airplane's "Feels So Good" from their secon live album. I'm 60 now and for years I've played a Rickenbacker 360 12 and my favorite bands have been the Byrds, Airplane and Fairport Convention...miles away from the Funk. But a funny thing happened when I put this cd into my car cd player. The bands I've been in always played a mix of stuff, from the Byrds to the Stooges and listening to Mark Farner I realized that he is where I learned to play hard rock guitar. I am not bragging because I don't profess to be as good as he is, but that album must have gotten into my head in such a profound way back in 1969 that his playing got wired into my back brain. Now, that's powerful stuff. I almost feel like it's me playing. My friend Dennis played drums and NEVER looked up...hung his head because he was so into what we were playing. Bob wore big bellbottoms and played bass and as I remember, we were good. This album played a part in who I am as a musician. To have influenced one part of my playing style all these years when I hadn't even thought of the band is powerful metaphysically. RIP Dennis and Bob, we'll play "Mr. Limosine Driver" and "Eight Miles High" again someday. Thank you Mark Farner.

Grand Funk by Grand Funk Railroad i got my first grand funk album at age 8, that was 40 years, my time flies. i was pleasantly surprised that their music has made a small come back. Their music is blues based rock. Pretty good stuff even by todays standards for a 3 member band. great little riffs throughout, nice drumming. in the day this band was considered metal, thus my parents hated it. Funny how things change but good music doesn't. also check the albums, live and mark, don and mel. i wore out my live lp, which reminds me i should get another copy.
