All thing’s bright and beautiful
Another heart warming, funny, adventurous book on being a veterinarian during the 1930s in England. It is wonderful to step back in time and realize that people haven’t really changed at all whether rich or poor. The countryside descriptions have me feeling the breeze, smelling the green hillsides and learning about livestock and their owners. A great read.

I loved this book.
It gave me a look at the lives of the people in James Harriet’s life. I love the word pictures he paints. We read this every night before going to bed. I am anxious to start the next book.

Like a chat by the fireside with an old friend
As one very happy with a plant-based diet, I was not enamored by the treatment of animals as commodities, but that was the culture of the time and place. But I was enthralled by the ease of the story telling and the author’s ability to convey real people in real settings.I think Wendell Berry would have been very comfortable in James Herriot’s England, and both would have been comfortable in each other’s company.

Humane and good-humored
These are James Herriot's classic stories about his veterinary practice in Yorkshire in the 1930s. He presents an admirable figure, though he is not above a lot of gentle, self-deprecating humor. His devotion to his furry patients and affection for them, as well as his respect for the rough-hewn folks of Yorkshire, shine on every page. A very pleasant read.

A wonderful series
I read All creatures great and small and afterwards I knew I had to continue the series. Written against a beautiful background of the English countryside in the early years of the 20th century, the srorues of the gentle soul of James Herriot and his clients and patients made me laugh out loud at the misadventures and the heartwarming moments in his practice, as well as the characters he meets in his chosen line of work. His love of the natural surroundings and that he realizes his incredible luck to be part of it made this book and the who!e series an immensely satisfying read for me

Word painting
The late James Alfred Wight/James Herriot was a top writer of word pictures. One could say he painted with words. His ability to cause the reader to envision the animals, places, people, and things has been equaled by few writers I have read.

A real treasure
Amidst the challenges of the pandemic and extended periods of lockdown, a notable silver lining emerged: the opportunity to become acquainted with "All Creatures Great & Small," the remake depicting the life of James Herriot in the Yorkshire Dales during the 1930s &1940s. Rediscovering both the original show and Herriot's timeless books proved to be a cherished gift, offering glimpses into a simpler era of days gone by.
