Roadblocks in Acting

This book gave me multiple Aha Moments as an acting teacher and as an actress. Rob in a very simple, conversational way provided me with systematic approaches that I can employ in my acting lessons. Once applied the revelations were endless. Often times as a teacher the roadblocks are obvious but the solution is not as clear. Personally I do not believe in 'breaking' the students to build them up but I am also aware of the pitfalls of taking on being a therapist. Rob gave me multiple ideas on how to address roadblocks in a constructive way. The inclusion of psychology expanded my knowledge of other contributing factors that affect the work from the importance of an Actor's self-knowledge to his/her conscious application of mindfulness as a valuable part of one's creative process. As I read the book, I found myself becoming a student of acting all over again. I started to reflect on the specifics of how I removed some of my acting roadblocks. This reflection forced me to be specific and it was in these specifics that I created exercises to aid the students in identifying their roadblocks in a fearless way. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to all Teachers of Acting, Directors and Actors. Rob perfectly articulates the anxieties that go along with attempting to surpass roadblocks and he provides great insight, feedback, and suggestions on how to do so in a way that supports the individual within the student artist. I am more empowered as a teacher because with my newly acquired knowledge I am more equipped to handle the challenge of roadblocks in acting.

I would absolutely recommend this book to any actor who wants to strengthen their skills as an actor. It effortlessly catalogues what could potentially be holding you back from creating the best possible work whilst also giving tips and tricks to help overcome those areas. Keeping a journal to track your journey and progress is a stellar idea and helps keep you accountable for your work.

This book should be your go-to guide when stuck and you don't know where to turn as an actor. "Roadblocks in Acting" helps the reader identify and challenge their shortcomings as an actor. I recommend you read the book, practice the exercises inside, and keep a detailed journal about your progress!
