Q: Can these spacers be use with the K5 jig?

These spacers can be used with either the K4 or the K5.

Q: why not just use 1/4" scrap pieces of craft scants? Or 1/4" pieces of plywood? Why spend $13 on these as opposed to these other, free options?

you can use what ever you want to , for $13 dollars there's no hassle. as long as you you cut your plywood and make your spacers you can even label them for what project you need them for. if your going to make them I be sure of what projects need them for and do all of them at the same time.

Q: spacer blocks and portable base: do you use the spacer blocks instead of the portable base?

The spacers are for thicker wood. You still need the portable base. Each spacer adds 1/4 inch to the thickness the portable base is set for. I believe the base alone is good for 1/2 inch thick material, so you would need two spacers for a 1 inch thick board, four spacers for 1 1/2 inch and so on.

Q: Are these only for use without the jig installed in the portable base?

Yes, these are intended to make it easy to get the right spacing when you've taken the guide block out of the base for portable use, especially on inside 90-degree corners. Ben BolluytKreg Tech Support
