Susho is a 2500 year old family tradition, with a unique and fascinating history. In Feng Shui, owls have a more Western symbolism, wisdom. But, in traditional Chinese culture, owls have a different significance. The word for owl has a similar pronunciation to bravery. Owls symbolize daring people, who do things most people would not be brave enough to do. Daredevils who act in unusual places, at unusual hours. Owls also represent mysticism, "Ghost Birds" who move stealthily, seeming to appear out of thin air, just like a ghost. People were very careful not to upset owls, fearing supernatural consequences. The hooting sound owls make, sounds like the word for dig, and people feared angry owls would call for their graves to be dug. When planning a powerful Feng Shui grouping, Chinese practitioners, called "Feng Shui Sir", regardless of gender, often will make a bird grouping of owls for wisdom, eagles for energy, peacocks for good fortune and doves for peace and tranquility. Centuries ago, when Susho began to evolve from home furnishing and clothing, the Emperor and his court wanted wall art to decorate their palaces. The aristocrats favored natural scenes, wanting to capture the detail and texture of flora and fauna. Susho artists learned to please the taste of the elites, by making natural scenes as realistic as possible.
