Cabinet scrapers are an invaluable tool in the woodshop for creating an exceptionally fine finish on wood regardless of grain direction or figure. They are also useful for removing traces of paint, varnish or distress marks on wood. Most scrapers available today are made from spring steel and are hardened to RC 38-42 on the Rockwell hardness scale. These scrapers are made from French spring steel and are hardened to 48-52 RC. This specification gives excellent edge retention while still allowing the “spring” or “flex” in the blade which gives the user control of the tool. These rectangular scrapers are the standard rectangular shape for scraping flat surfaces and their corners may be used for cleaning out tight spaces. These scrapers are sharpened by polishing the square edges and then drawing out a fine hook with a hardened burnisher. They are 60 mm (2.35”) x 150 mm (6”) and are offered in 5 thicknesses: .25 mm (0.010”), .4 mm (0.15”), .6 mm (0.023”), .8 mm (0.31”) and 1 mm (0.039”). They can be purchased in pairs of the same thickness or in a 4 piece set with the 4 thinner versions. The 2 thinnest (.25 mm or 0.010” and .4 mm or 0.0150”) have superior “flex”, can be used with one hand if needed, and are perfect for finer work. The remaining 3 thicknesses can be used for standard to heavy stock removal, with the 0.039” or 1 mm being a good choice for paint removal.
