Q: Why is there such a strong plastic odor to this product and has anyone noticed staining or yellowing?

I didn’t have a strong odor. It came with a light new smell because it was new. But after no. Mines still in color I mops over it no problems haven’t change yet

Q: Can scraps be recycled?

I believe each trash hauler has their own recycling requirements. There is no " recycling triangle" on the packaging.

Q: Is this a good cushion for protecting a wood floor from a heavy leather couch and love seat? I don't want to dent the floor.

In my opinion, I think you should use a company called Clever and Easy x-protector furniture pads. The pads are thick and you have a choice of nonskid or sliding pads. I had laminate flooring installed two years ago and my heavy sofa bed has not scratched or discolored my floors. The Resilia runner is an outstanding product great for protecting kitchen and laundry room floors from water splattering. I think this is a more cost effective and eye pleasing.
