Review: 24-hour Initial Review – Early Pros & Concerns - February 04, 2024 Update: Track ball works well. Doesn't seem to have but one issue and that issue is probably my problem. The scroll ring sometimes and my fingers don't jive causing me top hit one of the corner buttons. I must further practice, do much more practice. New Thought, 31dec23: Dragging and dropping, for instance, an email in MS Outlook to a folder can be challenging. I have not figured out the best method. Am looking for any ideas... 28dec23: Overall, I like the trackball and am tentatively at about 60/40 thinking to keep the device. Has many interesting functions and possibilities. Will know more as I work to better use the device. I definitely need more practice with the trackball because my long-term use of a regular mouse allows me to be pretty fast with the mouse. Early Pro’s: 1. Bluetooth connecting is really easy. 2. Kensington Works software for the trackball is easily downloaded for the device and pretty easy to use although it is not overly intuitive. 3. Large trackball seems very good particularly located in the mid position. Is good for me with some tremors and a shaky thumb compared with a side trackball. The middle trackball is far superior, for me, to the side mounted track balls. With practice, I am sure that I can rapidly move the cursor via the trackball. 4. Left Click/lower left button works pretty well. I seem to have it pretty well figured. Using my thumb for this button. 5. Right Click/lower right button not so handy as the Left Click button. Learning. May do better with it after more practice. 6. Have not really used upper two buttons, yet. 7. Scroll ring works well. Don’t have clicking noise that other reviewers have reported. 8. Don’t know how the battery life will be; we shall see. 9. Don’t yet know how the wrist rest will be although it seems okay with this short time review. Early Concerns: 1. Will take considerable practice for me which I am willing to do to become proficient with the trackball. 2. Have already learned to be very careful not to simultaneously touch the trackball while trying to scroll. Is easy to do! Result is my inadvertent action takes me some crazy place I did not want to go!
Review: Why did I wait so long? - The reason I bought this trackball mouse may be different than others. ARCADE GAMING!!! More on that in a bit.. However, I have found that this is probably THE BEST accessory I have purchased for my computer(s) in many years. And that's saying a lot considering the number of goodies I have bought. I have 4 mice sitting here. All of them are wireless. 2 of them are gaming mice with many buttons, DPI changers, etc.. They all do exactly what they should do, and they do it very well. However, as one that uses my computer at times 20 hours at a time my hands can get very painful holding/using a mouse. I use an ergonomic keyboard and will NEVER go back to using a straight flat keyboard again. I had a trackball (wired) from Kensington many many years ago (like back in windows 98 era I think) and loved it. So I have had some experience with them. I did a couple days of research into which trackball mouse I would want. I looked at the finger ones, thumb ones, marble, full size, etc.. I read literally 1000's of reviews. (Just a hint, I ALWAYS read the negative reviews first. Show me the issues people have so I can decide if it is worth it, just in case....then show me all the positives.) The reviews of this one over many different sites sold me. And of course, since I buy via desertcart, I have NO ISSUES if I don't like it and want to return it. So, why exactly did I want one? Well, because I LOVE to play arcade games. And my favorite arcade games are old one like Crystal Castles, Centipede, Star Wars, Missile Command, Golden Tee (golf), etc. And to play these where they simple don't suck, you MUST use a trackball. Well, I sold my video cabinet years ago which had a trackball panel with it. So I thought I would give this a try as a replacement. WOW!!!!!! This is a dream when it comes to playing arcade games that utilize trackballs. The ball spins so beautifully and has exactly the right momentum force that the games play exactly how they are supposed to. As for use as a mouse for the PC? Again..... WOW! My hand does not fatigue at all, even after 10-15-20 hours of constant use when doing design work. I LOVE the fact that you can program the 4 buttons to do whatever you want PER APPLICATION!!!! In other words, you can tell it to use button 1 for this function in MS Word, and that function in Photoshop. And the scroll ring???? OMG I have fallen in love with this thing!!! While I wish I could use it in games that use a spinner (tron, arkanoid, etc.) I have not found a way to do that. It simply scrolls pages up and down. And can also be used for zoom effects zooming in and out. LOVE that feature. What makes it so much better than any mouse wheel I have used (and some of my mice are $$$$$) is that you can program the speed/range. Same with the ball speed. You can adjust it for how far it will move, acceleration speed, and how fast overall. I can't boast enough about this trackball. And while I got down to two choices....I am so happy that I picked this one. I am selling my mice now...(may keep one, just in case) but will never NOT have one of these trackballs on my desk.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does it work on Linux?**
A: Yes. I’ve used this trackball with 5 different releases of Linux Mint going back some years. All 4 buttons will work, but you will have to monkey with your desktop environment to map them to what you want.

**Q: does left click result in double click after use?**
A: I have a Kensington "Mouse Port/Serial" version (RS232 "COM" Serial or PS/2) Expert Mouse trackball (from the mid 90's) that I bought new all those years ago when I built my Intel 486 DX2-66 PC (66Mhz = 0.066Ghz) and have been using for hours and hours every day on each PC upgrade I've built ever since (currently a i7-4790K !), including audio editing, gaming, web browsing, and more... I still have the original box which says "OS2 Warp" and "Works with Windows 95 and Windows 3.1" and "5 Year Warranty" on it (yes, it's really THAT old!) and all these years later I'm now using it on a 4.0Ghz quad-core PC running Windows 10 Pro x64 with no problems whatsoever! Even after pounding hard on the bottom left button for gaming year after year it just took the abuse and kept on working fine. After about 15 years of that abuse along with lots of hard pressure holding of that same bottom left button for selecting audio segments, manually scrolling through documents and web pages, and so on, it began occasionally either releasing or double-clicking during selecting of audio segments as if I'd released the button when I had not, BUT after sitting overnight it always goes back to normal and doesn't act up like that unless I start doing lots of heavy thumb action with bottom left button holding or pounding again. If I remember to go a little easier on the pressing or don't do a ton of left button holds it can go for weeks before the bottom left button gets quirky again. Also note that it's literally 20 years old, it's been doing that off and on for about a decade now, and it has never been anywhere near as intermittent and downright useless as the Logitech buttons become in less than a year with comparable use. We have Logitech trackballs at work and after the third replacement batch in 2 years they've learned to live with the flaky buttons because the boss feels that $25-$40 for a mouse is absurd and he definitely won't spend the money to buy Kensington trackballs... I'm actually about to replace my 20 year old Kensington Expert Mouse with the new model, only because I need a KVM, my back-lit keyboard is "USB only" (PS/2 Support), USB didn't exist when I bought my now 20 year old Serial/PS-2 Expert Mouse, and although I have successfully gotten its' signals to convert to USB through a (RS-232 COM Port) "Serial to USB interface" and also got a PS/2 to USB keyboard/mouse signal converter dongle to work with it I haven't been able to successfully get either of those converted USB signals to pass through a USB KVM...I started to look for other ways to adapt PS/2 or Serial to USB that claimed to be KVM compatible but I couldn't find a workable solution that would pass through a USB KVM for less than the cost of a brand new Kensington USB Expert Mouse so sadly I think my 20 year old Expert Mouse is about to be retired and an new USB one will finally be taking its' place soon. I hope the quality of today's Kensington Expert Mouse is as good as they were 20 years ago. Time will tell... Also note that my 20 year old Expert Mouse that still works very well uses 2 giant wide metal rollers for the X and Y axis motion detection (that the ball rests on) with photo-led sensor wheels inside to generate the X/Y mouse movement signals, basically over-sized industrial grade versions of the small plastic roller rods the old rubber ball mice used to use (which had to be cleaned when the cursor started getting stuck and I need to clean these maybe once every 3-4 years at the most), unlike the much newer mouse technology of the past decade that uses optical detectors to actually look at the ball and see it move. As a comparison, Logitech once offered a big track ball mouse for a while that looked almost identical to the Kensington Expert Mouse for less than half the price and when I lifted the ball out to check out the rollers it was immediately obvious why the price was so much less. They were tiny rollers just like you'd find inside a cheap old ball mouse! So 20 years ago you got what you paid for, and even 10 years ago it was obvious that the Kensington products were still vastly superior in quality to their competition and based on the reviews here that still seems to be the case.

**Q: Can the Expert side scroll? I use spreadsheets that are really wide and have a lot of columns and need that feature.**
A: Even better than holding the SHIFT key, you can scroll horizontally ONE-HANDED: Assign one of the additional buttons to activate the SHIFT key using the included KENSINGTON TRACKBALL WORKS software. I recommend using the button opposite your thumb so you can use your thumb to scroll horizontally. So, for those RIGHT-handed assign SHIFT to the TOP RIGHT button, for LEFT-handed assign SHIFT to the TOP LEFT button. This works on Windows and Mac OS X.More Info: http://www.kensington.com/us/us/6498/trackballworks%e2%84%a2-customization-software

**Q: Does the scroll ring on this mouse have clicks that you can feel while scrolling - when scrolling through a set of images to be able to know that you**
A: No, I don't know if the people above had a different version of the mouse or something but there are NO clicks on the scroll ring. It scrolls smoothly.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Ergonomics better than expected.
*by D***S on August 21, 2022*

I gave it 4 stars because nothing is perfect. Here's my experience. I have used the smaller Kensington Orbital trackball (perfect ergonomics) for almost twenty years in my Digital and Print Production work and into my retirement. I have no idea how many miles of clipping paths I've drawn over the last twenty-five years with a mouse or a trackball. I usually had to replace the Orbital every two to three years because of the mileage. For a long time I have considered the Expert wireless as a replacement because of the additional 2 programable buttons and Bluetooth. But after reading the negative reviews, the Expert seemed too awkward to use, and I would buy another Orbital. I finally took a chance on the Expert Wireless, and without too much adjustment, I do not regret the purchase. There definitely is an adjustment, but then I'm left-handed and have been adjusting all my life to right-handed tools and devices. The beauty of the Kensington Orbital and Expert trackballs is the symmetry and programability. Now for the adjustment period (please refer to uploaded photos). 1. Side view of both to illustrate difference in ergonomic hand to ball position. As you can see, the older version fits perfectly in the palm of your hand with at a comfortable position for movement. You absolutely need the wrist pad for the Expert. 2. The Expert Wireless requires more desk space. 3. On the Mac, disregard removing the Bluetooth USB dongle from the battery compartment. Check your Bluetooth settings for ExpertBT5.0 that confirms your trackball is connected. The software install an App in your Applications Folder with a Preference Pane in the System Preferences that will launch the app. 4. You must enable the 'KensingtonWorksHelper' in the System Preferences/Security & Privacy/ Otherwise you will not see any programable settings in the Trackball preferences. 5. The software asks you to link your preferences to either Dropbox or Microsoft OneDrive. Since I have both I didn't ask any questions about alternative local prefs. 6. The major ergonomic consideration for me is arm/hand position height relative to the arm of the chair. I like to have the chair support my elbow and have my hand fall effortlessly on the trackball so all movement is in the wrist without strain. For me, this requires the keyboard tray to be about 25" from the floor, while the desk surface is a normal 29" from the floor. 7. I have program the bottom right button for a single click (thumb). I found that the lower left button was too awkward for what is considered the right-click. So I use the upper left button and my middle finger. this seems natural to me. 8. I find the scroll wheel not useful compared to scrolling with Magic Trackpad. It's not in the way, so it's not a problem. 9. Yes, you do have to wake up the trackball after the Computer has been in Sleep mode. That's a function of being wireless. I've been using the Expert now for almost three weeks without a problem. So far, so good.
