## Description

The classic guide to working from home and why we should embrace a virtual office, from the bestselling authors of Rework “A paradigm-smashing, compulsively readable case for a radically remote workplace.”—Susan Cain, New York Times bestselling author of Quiet Does working from home—or anywhere else but the office—make sense? In Remote, Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson, the founders of Basecamp, bring new insight to the hotly debated argument. While providing a complete overview of remote work’s challenges, Jason and David persuasively argue that, often, the advantages of working “off-site” far outweigh the drawbacks. In the past decade, the “under one roof” model of conducting work has been steadily declining, owing to technology that is rapidly creating virtual workspaces. Today the new paradigm is “move work to the workers, rather than workers to the workplace.” Companies see advantages in the way remote work increases their talent pool, reduces turnover, lessens their real estate footprint, and improves their ability to conduct business across multiple time zones. But what about the workers? Jason and David point out that remote work means working at the best job (not just one that is nearby) and achieving a harmonious work-life balance while increasing productivity. And those are just some of the perks to be gained from leaving the office behind. Remote reveals a multitude of other benefits, along with in-the-trenches tips for easing your way out of the office door where you control how your workday will unfold. Whether you’re a manager fretting over how to manage workers who “want out” or a worker who wants to achieve a lifestyle upgrade while still being a top performer professionally, this book is your indispensable guide.

Review: Fantastic book - If you're interested in remote working you should not miss this one. After reading you will believe that remote working is not so difficult as it's made out to be. This book concentrates on all the relavant stuff including the main tools required for remote working, importance of communication and the importance of trusting the employee to get work done remotely. A short book, but with so much of value, packed in it.
Review: A comprehensive collection of guidelines for working remotely, but somewhat underwhelming - This book is a comprehensive collection of guidelines for working remotely. It covers all aspects: the advantages of remote working, the disadvantages of working in an office, common objects to remote and how to address them, what to do and not to do when working remotely, how to hire people who are a good fit for working remotely, and so on. The book is a comprehensive collection of techniques for working remotely. I feel it was worth my time to read it, since working remotely is a reality today. I came close to starting a startup with a remote cofounder, in fact, in addition to working remotely for many years before that, so I think knowing how to work well remotely is an essential skill in today's world. The book is written in a very clear, crisp and concise manner, as is typical of 37 signals's great book Rework. So it's quick to finish. The book does seem a little one-sided in its arguments. It tries to pass remote off as having tons of advantages and few disadvantages. That's a little hard to believe. A more balanced approach would have worked better. For example, this books talks of the disadvantages of working in an office. Fine. So how would you design an office, and the culture, so that you have the benefit of face to face interactions when needed but not interruptions all day? Maybe equip everyone with private offices with doors that close, so that people can close them when they want to concentrate, and open them when they are available to chat? The book does seem a little facile, but still worth reading, which is why I awarded it four stars.

I have been planning to convert my current local office to a distributed workspace. This book has been really helpful as it gave me a clear idea of the Do's and Dont's while I begin the process. If you do not want to learn few important things the hard way then please read this book.
